Spiritual Journey
Most, if not all of the principles of positive thinking, reaching goals and changing our lives are based upon principles from the Scriptures (Bible); though we really hate to admit it. As I think about the New Year and make plans to improve my life, Phillipians 3: 12-14 comes to mind. The apostle Paul talks about straining and pressing. May I suggest there are three attitudes and actions that we must have and do (essentials) to be successful according to this passage of Scripture. Paul is addressing and encouraging Christians to continue in their faith in Christ. The principles can be applied to our daily lives which Christian living is about. What are the 3 essentials needed to live a abundant life? 1. Forget Your Past. Vs. 13. What should you let go of? Definitely not the mercies of God! Only those things (thoughts, actions & attitudes), that hinder us from living for God and becoming what He has planned for us. Yes, we need to learn from our past challenges; however, we do not need to dwell on them. Take the wisdom you have gained from the past experiences and use it for the present and future. “If you continue to live in the past, you will never enjoy the present nor the future.” Ask yourself what do I need to let go of? Is it resentment toward my spouse? Am I always taking care of the needs of others and saying some day I will take care of myself? Is there something in my past hindering my future progress? Sit down, write out your thoughts and pray about them. Be Honest! Let God do the changing. It’s not about you changing you. A change that is long lasting comes from the inner man and changes the inner man. 2. Focus on Your Priorities. Vs. 14. Do you know what your priorities are? What is really important to you? Your priorities can usually be identified by where you are spending most of your time. May be you will discover that what you thought was a priority really is not. Perhaps your priorities need to be rearranged. “If you don’t focus on your priorities everything that comes your way becomes important; leaving you ineffective and your life joyless. One priority that we have as Christians is to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things taken together will be given you besides (Matt 6:33, Amplified Bible). What things? Read the whole chapter 6, especially verses 25- end of chapter. 3. Function in the present. “Yesterday is gone, tomorrow has not arrived; all we have is today.” Right now! We can be distracted by the past and the future-fears and all kinds of insecurities. The what ifs…., should haves, could haves, would haves ….. and other situations and decisions in life that appear to be urgent. Satan, yes I said satan, uses situations, circumstances-trivial matters to keep us from living the abundant life God has prepared for us. Notice in verse 13, Paul says, “One thing I do…. He did not say; “I’m trying to do”, but “one thing I do.” He has decided to take action and believe that what he is doing will come to pass in Christ. Paul’s faith is in Christ and Jesus’ ability to make things happen. He recognized his weaknesses, but certainly through Christ “he was going to do instead of try.” To function in the present I must admit that:
The essentials for an abundant life must be lived every day. May I encourage you to pray, write out your goals, visit them every day and take daily action to accomplish them. Don’t let life just happen to you any longer, live it!
